What is Sciatica
Sciatica is an unbearable painful condition that usually affects one side of the body. The pain varies in severity from patient to patient and can be mild, moderate or severe. Most people with Sciatica complain of an aching, burning or tingling sensation from the buttocks downwards to the leg(s). In the real sense, Sciatica is a symptom of the impinged sciatic nerve. This important nerve, which originates in the spine and runs down the back of the legs to the feet, is the longest in the human body. Sciatica may also be characterized by a weakened leg muscle. The pain is usually severest when Sciatica sufferers have been sitting or standing for long. Straining from coughing, laughing, and moving one’s bowels can also make Sciatica worse.
Sciatica may also result from a ruptured or slipped disc or a narrowing of the canal encasing the spinal cord. When one vertebra slips over another one or where a patient has osteoporosis, the result could be Sciatica. While many people use conventional medicine to treat this condition, what they end up addressing is the symptoms, not the root cause. Using acupuncture and homeopathy is a better way of addressing Sciatica. Here is why:
Acupuncture for Sciatica
Unlike conventional medicine, the Chinese believe that the body is interconnected and no one part can be separated from another. Diagnosis and treatment of disease rely on identifying specific imbalances in muscles and the body in its entirety. The essence of acupuncture is to treat correctly the root of the problem and not just masking the condition. In the process, the body is encouraged to heal itself. It is believed that your body has an energy force known as Chi. When Chi is in a state of imbalance, that’s when a person becomes sick with ailments such as Sciatica.
The aim of acupuncture is to restore an energetic and healthy flow of Chi. By its nature, acupuncture involves inserting needles in parts of the body to trigger a response of the nervous system. This causes the brain to release endorphins and enkephalins, which are natural painkillers. Another result is increasing the flow of blood to the painful area and relaxing the muscles in the surrounding area. That way, this method helps patients of Sciatica to get over their pain. Acupuncture also helps the muscles to relax.
Homeopathy for Sciatica
There are plenty of natural homeopathic remedies for Sciatica. Homeopathic remedies are used to treat chronic as well as acute Sciatica. By its nature, homeopathy is done using natural medicines which are safe. These remedies work on the root cause of Sciatica giving patients complete and effective healing. In the end, patients are totally healed to the extent of not requiring surgical intervention. The following are some of the homeopathic remedies for Sciatica:
The homeopathic remedy that’s effective for treating Shooting Spasmatic Pain of the left side is Colocynthis. It doesn’t matter how far the pain goes. It could be running all the way from the buttocks to the legs or localized in the hip. As long as it’s on the left side, here is the remedy for it.
- Magnesia Phosphorica
Magnesia Phosphoricais mainly used as a treatment for Sciatica of the right side which can feel like it’s stabbing, shooting, cutting or stitching.Such pain usually runs from the low back to the back of the leg and buttocks. The pain will go away with a little pressure and warmth.
- Ammonium Muriaticum
When a patient has chronic Sciatica with the pain tearing and shooting into the tips of the toes, they are best treated using Ammonium Muriaticum. The patient usually has contractions and hamstring, which makes it difficult for them to straighten the affected leg. Some of the most common symptoms include hip pain, heel pain, and a crooked walking style. As such the patient feels less pain when walking stooped, lying down, limbering up, and rubbing the affected area. It gets worse when walking upright, sitting, resting in bed or while asleep at night.
Shooting pain along the leg that comes as a result of the cold has a homeopathic remedy in Arsenicum. The patient usually complains of exhaustion, weakness, restlessness, chilliness, burning pain, and aching heels. Pain sometimes goes all the way to the toes. Walking, warmth and a hot compress are the ways to deal with the symptoms. However, one is discouraged to avoid exertion, dampness, and lying on the right side.
When a patient has extremely intense and tearing pain from the buttocks to the heel coupled with numbness, Chamomilla is the best remedy. Patients usually find it hard to stay in bed at night due to the intensity of the pain. One may also present with symptoms such as spasms, heavy limbs, irritability, stiffness, hot sweats, cramps, restless legs, and burning feet. The symptoms usually get worse from lying on the painless side, stretching, warmth, after being angry, and at night.
It is recommended that Sciatica patients take Gnaphalium when they have intense numbness followed by Sciatica pain. The pain is usually shooting and intense and runs along the entire length of the nerve. Patients also complain of cramps in the calves, joints that feel creaky and dry, and neuralgia in the front of the legs. The symptoms may be ameliorated through sitting. However, movement and dampness can only make the symptoms worse.
- Rhus Toxicodendron
When a patient presents with Sciatica with tearing pain and intense attacks of burning, the best remedy is Rhus Toxicodendron. Patients usually complain of their legs feeling stiff, dead, and wooden. It is also common to complain of pain down the back of the thighs and leg cramps. Ways to improve the symptoms include continued motion, stretching, rubbing or heating. However, it’s made worse with dampness, overexertion, after resting, initial motion, and at night.
It is recommended that, for effective treatment of Sciatica, a patient combines acupuncture and homeopathy. It also helps to apply heat and a little pressure on the affected muscles. There is, however, no need for conventional medicine.
