Why Have Hijama?

According to Ibn Umar, the Messenger said, “Hijama on an empty stomach is best. And it is both cure and a blessing. It improves the intellect and memory. So cup yourselves with the blessing of Allah on Thursday. Keep away from hijama on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to be safe. Perform hijama on Monday and Tuesday for it is the day that Allah saved Ayoub from a trial. He was inflicted with the trial on Wednesday. You will not find leprosy except on Wednesday or Wednesday night.”

As for the Islamic day and night, the night enters before the day. So at sunset on Tuesday, Wednesday night comes in. Hijama is best performed during the daytime between the hours of 9 AM and 9 PM in the summertime and between 11 AM and 5 PM in wintertime.

The Sunnah most recommended days for the treatment every month are when the 17th, 19th or 21st of the Islamic, lunar month coincide with Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. These are the best and most beneficial days for this treatment.

“If one is not able to be cupped on the 17th, 19th or 21st (coinciding with Monday, Tuesday or Thursday) then any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday of the month is good.”

Hijama May Be Used For:

  1. Headaches. 
    Salma, the servant of the Messenger, said: “Whenever someone would complain of a headache to the Messenger of Allah he would advise them to perform hijama.” Also, Abdullah ibn Abbas reported that the Messenger was cupped on his head for a unilateral headache.
  2. Magic (fears, anxiety…).
    Ibn al-Qaiyum mentions in Quran that the Messenger was cupped on his head when he was afflicted with magic and that it is from the best of cures for this if performed correctly.
  3. Poisoning.
    Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that a Jewish woman gave poisoned meat to the Messenger, so he asked her: “What caused you to do that?” She replied, “If you are a Prophet then Allah will inform you of it and if you are not then I would save the people from you!”. When the Messenger felt discomfort from this poison, he performed cupping hijama that kept him alive.
  4. Strengthening Intelligence and Memory.
    Ibn Umar y reported that the Messenger said, “Hijama on an empty stomach is best. It is a cure and a blessing. It improves the intellect and memory…”
  5. Dislocation/Bruising
    Jaabir ibn Abdullah reported that the Messenger fell from his horse onto the trunk of a palm tree and dislocated his foot. “Messenger was cupped on (his foot) for bruising and was cured.”
  6. Hijama While fasting Or In The State Of Ihram
    Anas ibn Maalik was asked: “Did you dislike cupping for the fasting person?”He said, “No except for the reason of one becoming weak.”

Areas of Cupping (Hijama)

Anas ibn Maalik reported that the Messenger was treated with cupping (hijama) three times on the two veins at the side of the neck and the base of the neck.

  • Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that the Messenger r was cupped on his head.
  • Abdullah ibn Umar reported that the Messenger used to cup his top of the head
  • Jaabir ibn Abdullah reported that the Messenger was treated with hijama on his hip for pain in that area.
  • Anas ibn Maalik reported that the Messenger was treated with hijama on the top of his foot, for pain in that area.
  • Hijama at the bottom of the chest is beneficial for the treatment of sores, scabies, and mange on the thighs. It helps against gout, hemorrhoids, elephantiasis, and itchiness on the back.

Hijama For Women

Jaabir ibn Abdullah reported Umm Salama asked permission from the Messenger to be treated with hijama. So the Messenger ordered Abu Teeba to cup her. Jaabir ibn Abdullah said, ” I think that Abu Teeba is her brother through breastfeeding or a young boy who didn’t reach puberty.”
